The Iron Man Mk. XLVI is the definitive suit from the character’s appearances throughout its run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so let’s see if this is the definitive toy of it.

When it comes to the Marvel Superhero Iron Man everyone has that one suit that stands out for them. Whether it’s because of the look or a specific story/scene, we all have that one that comes first to mind when we think of the character even if we really like 25 more. I don’t consider the comic and movie iterations one-and-the-same so when I think of the comics and it’s the Modular Armor (Model 13) and for the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies it’s the Mark XLVI (46.) The look of the XLVI has that perfect mixture of more “muscular” shape that the XLV brought while having a color scheme and helmet design that feels more like Iron Man than what I felt was more Ultron-esque in the XLV’s. As for its role in the movies, “Captain America: Civil War” was a good movie but Iron Man’s fight against Captain America and The Winter Soldier was my favorite scene in the entire history of the MCU to-date from both a cinematic and emotional perspective. Needless to say the Mark XLVI is “it” for me and I was extremely happy to get the opportunity to purchase this Hot Toys iteration (note that this is the full figure and not the power-pose statue piece.) Before even breaking this piece down I will say that it’s incredible and I get giddy every time I look at it on my shelf. Presentation: The box itself is very nice and thick and the style of it with it splitting between top and bottom halves to open is also very neat. The styrofoam container for the main figure/accessories and the plastic clamshell for the additional accessories underneath are both extremely well done. Everything comes well packed and protected. The paint job and finish on this piece is just phenomenal and stands out before you even remove it from the styrofoam.
Build: The Hot Toys Iron Man Mk. XLVI is a mixture of plastic and diecast both in the inner frame and outer “shell” of the figure. Because of this, it’s fairly hefty which feels great and worthy of its higher-dollar price point. The joints are a mixture of friction and ratcheting and hold up very well. Even the accessories like the stand are extremely solidly built/painted and not a single piece on this feels like it has gotten less than the utmost effort by the designers. And I don’t even know how to accurately describe just how amazing the LEDs on this piece are. Even though putting in the batteries can be a bit of a hassle just because of how small and numerous they are it’s incredibly worth it once you do. 28 LEDs through the head and both front and back of the figure’s body and limbs literally light up a good portion of a dark room.

All of the accessories are well done and well made on top of feeling like actual necessities for the figure. My favorite piece is definitely the unmasked Tony Stark head which is in my opinion the best sculpted and painted head I’ve seen on a Hot Toys figure. The bruised eye and pained-but-determined expression really encompass the character in the latter portion of “Civil War” to the point that its how I display it (along with the alternate, damaged chest piece pictured in the gallery.)
Articulation: This Mk. XLVI has tons of articulation points and even thinks like an extending abdomen and drop-down hips to increase its range of motion however I do wish that the range went further, particularly in its abdominal crunch. It’s “pretty good” in this area but I feel like some slight tweaks could make it great.
Overall Score: 8/10 – Hot Toys absolutely nailed this in terms of build and aesthetic. The diecast Iron Man Mk. XLVI is nothing short of amazing in the way that it looks, feels, and plays however, I do wish that it had a bit more range in terms of articulation to really nail some of those key poses in a more natural manner. Overall it’s still an amazing toy and worthy of being a centerpiece display.
