Over these past few years, summerhas been big for Sen-ti-nel releases. In 2015 they released one of the best mecha-sets in my collection with the Metamor-Force line Dancouga. This very straightforward homage to the original “Beast Machine God” series is impeccable. Featuring the entire team of Eagle Fighter, Land Liger, Land Cougar, and Big Moth, this set really pays attention to the fine details of the individual mechs design-wise and gives them a good amount of articulation on their own (particularly Big Moth who by design has the same articulation as the combined Dancouga since it makes up the entire torso, arms, and legs of it.) The accessories are fairly simple in the Dankuken sword, Wing Booster, and the individual guns which all form the big Daigan beam canon. If that’s still not enough, it has the ability to combine with the previously-reviewed Black Wing to form Final Dancouga as well.
This Dancouga’s design would truly make Obari proud as it really nails everything from the details to even that Obari-styled silhouette. It comes with an alternate head with a screaming face to really top off the ultra-dynamic articulation (seriously; just look at the gallery.) In fact, this piece is such a love song to the anime that it’s even made to do the classic Obari-esque pose with the sword facing forward (featured in motion in the video section as well as the gallery below.) In fact, the articulation on this diecast combining team is so incredible that it can not only outpose most of my modern anime figures but look more clean doing so.
Also featured in this review is the Real-type colored version which is colored in homage to the latter episodes of the series as well as the Super Robot Wars video games (If you’re reading this, you like already know about and have played these games but if you haven’t; do! It’s a mecha fan’s heaven with dream matches galore.) Both in show and in toy form it’s very much so my preferred deco as I have a preference for more military-type colors schemes in general. This set was released during the summer of 2016 (as well as Riobot Mazinkaiser – what a summer!) and limited to 1500 pieces. Although it doesn’t come with the diecast weapons of the regular release, it does have a certificate of authenticity which also shows the production number of that particular one. It’s a very nice set and the insane secondary prices are a product of that.
These Dancouga pieces are incredible and I’m glad to have finally had the chance to share my thoughts on it with you all. Check out the video portion to see it in motion as well as what’s definitely my largest gallery to date below and let me know what you think in the comments.
Note: While I do have the Bandai Soul of Chogokin GX-13 Dancouga, I chose not to do a comparison in video or pictures because there is a “Renewal” version of the Soul of Chogokin coming later this year (2017) that will be more fit for comparison as it has upgraded parts to give it a more overall current “look.”
Overall Score: 9.5/10 – Easily my favorite combining mecha collectible that I own. Even outside of a strong bias towards the design, it’s just a damned good toy. There’s literally nothing missing from it in terms of articulation, the build is solid, and it looks like straight out of the artwork. Its ability to combine with Black Wing and the real color variant is just the icing on the cake. One of the best mecha toys (particularly combining sets) to-date, and one that has a lot of people scrambling to get it after having slept on it while it was available (Granted, the limited Real-type sold quickly.)
