At this year’s Wonderfest Hong Kong, Sentinel unveiled a repaint of their Re: Edit #05 Hulkbuster with Ed:Edit #14 Modular Hulkbuster (specifically titled the “Heavy Duty Modular Armor.”) It’s basically a killer repaint of a killer collectible and at a whopping 400 pieces released world-wide it’s pretty rare as well. Presentation: The box is a literal recolor of the original Hulkbuster’s using the exact same graphics, even. The piece itself pops right away with a nice hue of gold on top of a jet black with a gloss finish. Modular Iron Man is honestly just plain gorgeous.
Build: Modular Hulkbuster is a mixture of plastic and diecast parts (mostly on the inner frame.) Everything is well put together and overall feels sturdy with smooth joints that really make it fun for play.
Accessories: Like the original release, Modular Hulkbuster simply comes with two stands; the generic Hall of Armor base and a specialized, larger stand with an adapter to fit this particular piece (and in a nice touch the adapter is colored black to color match.) With fully articulated hands/fingers, Modular Hulkbuster does not have the same need for things like alternate, pre-posed hands like the other armors do.
Articulation: The articulation on Modular Hulkbuster is incredible, particularly for the larger, bulky design of it. Definitely watch the video to see it in motion because watching it do dynamic poses that you’d never expect is a real treat to see and even better feeling to execute once you’ve got it in hand. I do wish that the thighs had more room to swing backwards since the back of the crotch plating really hinders that but overall this is a really advanced piece in this area.
Overall Score: 10.5/10 as a toy and 11/10 as an exclusive – Gotta’ go with the same score for Modular Hulkbuster that I gave the original one because fact is I appreciate this design and engineering even more so than I do then. The choice of coloring for the Modular Hulkbuster is perfection and the execution was flawless so overall it’s just a great piece and even though it’s a bit more pricey due to its size and gimmicks it was nice to see Sentinel choose one of the best of this line for a repaint.
