Headmasters homages you say? Well ok, then! Fansproject kicks off their Function X line with “Code”! A slick homage to the G1 Transformers character Chromedome: This toy brings the same level of awesome that Fansproject’s known for, but in a much more “G1” style.

The Robot mode is a great likeness to the Headmasters/Masterforce Chromedome character, as well as an outstanding update to the G1 toy. It had been stated that this was done buy a different designer than normal, and you can tell from the way that it’s such a straightforward homage, rather than a more anime-styled update. Setting at right under 6″, this one scales very well with a classics collection.

The color choices and paint applications are just flawless. It’s so cleanly finished that it’s a treat to even look at.

His weapons, like the original toy, are two sniper rifles. The red coloring with white accents looks really good.

The poseability is nice. The swiveling plate to emulate a neck turn is nice, and the added latch to let him look downwards was an unexpected bonus. I do wish that it had more shoulder clearance to swing the arms outward more, as well as ankle tilting to give his feet a flat connection to the ground when the legs are more spread out.

With the IDW ongoing series of comics not focusing on the fact that Chromedome was originally a headmaster, it’s nice to see this toy keep that homage alive. The headmaster is very simple, in that his transformation pretty much consists of curling the figure into itself, but it’s a very nicely painted piece in both head and robot modes.

I do wish that it had elbow joints in robot mode, but it’s understandable with a figure so small.

This is very likely my favorite transformation yet in a Fansproject toy. No wasted motions as well as a good, fluid process that just feels natural. Add to that the fact that your only “parts forming” is switching the guns to his forearms before you start the process, and you’ve got something that you’ll not only execute like a master from doing it just once, but a process that feels good to do as well.

The alt. mode on this thing is just awesome. It’s a much more “sleek” version of the G1 toy’s alt. mode, with some great detailing and weapon integration.

A cool part about this is the fact that the cockpit can open up to reveal a seat that the Headmaster can set into. There’s even a peg on the seat for him to set more securely.

A great toy with proceeds that went to a great cause! Be glad if you have this on the way, and if you don’t: Get one before the second-hand prices get TOO insane…

Overall Score: 9.0/10
