Good Smile Company enters the modeling fray with their Moderoid line featuring down-scaled versions of popular Super Robot toy designs. In this review I’m taking a look at their first release Mazinkaiser which is modeled after the Sentinel Riobot version. Check out the video as well as my thoughts and gallery below and of course let me know what you think in the comments.

Presentation: The box is very nice with nice artwork. It’s a model kit, so when you open it you see a bunch of sprues inside of plastic bags so there’s nothing to really speak on there.

Build: Being a model, this is a completely plastic piece coming wholly disassembled on sprues for you to put together. It assembles well-enough (the two spots where I **had** to use glue were the chest plate and palder which the instructions suggest using glue on as well.) I just wish that the joints rotated and bent more smoothly without modification like sanding.

Accessories: Moderoid Mazinkaiser comes with a variety of hands, his scrander, and a single, large sword. I’d say that the chosen accessories are good in their usefulness and well-selected.

Articulation: For what it is, the articulation is actually pretty nice. The only thing that really stands out as “falling short” on this Mazinkaiser is the lack of double-jointed knees. Outside of that, even though it’s no where near as extensively engineered as the Sentinel Riobot, the Moderoid can do a lot of things “at face value” that the larger Gokin does.

Overall Score: 6.5/10 – From what I’ve seen with this Mazinkaiser the Moderoid kit will be a very good line for those primarily looking for cost-effective pieces that LOOK like some of the popular Super Robot offerings and as long as they know what they’re getting, these will be a great buy. However, in the grand scheme of comparisons to other model kits by the likes of Bandai at similar pricing, this really does not come anywhere near that standard in terms of build or general quality. I can’t really recommend this due to the quality but at the same time it’s a really cost-effective way to get a version of Sentinel’s Mazinkaiser on your shelf.
