It’s hard to really put into words just how good Bandai’s Soul of Chogokin GX-71 Voltron is. It does both the mecha and its fans a great justice and even for people who are simply toy collectors, this is a centerpiece-type of display. The beautiful colors and shine really make this piece pop as soon as you pull the Styrofoam out of the box. The kicker is that these lions feel even better than they look with a great weightiness and solidity that really shine as high-end. Solid joints make playing with the vast amount of articulation in both individual lions and combined form secure and fun. The transformation itself to combined mode is a simple process by design, but satisfying and you also reveal some extremely neat gimmicks like heel spurs and well-placed security locks during the process.

Voltron comes with a good number of accessories for both the individual lions and combined form that all have the same quality feel as the toy itself. The weaponry homages both the show and the original toys and just add to the awesome feeling of nostalgia about this piece.

Overall Score: 9.5/10 – With Soul of Chogokin Voltron, Bandai showed why the this line will be a staple of Super Robot collecting for some time. There are a number of large scale, transforming/combining Voltron toys and even at the most high end I don’t feel like any of the others currently hold a torch to just how well done this piece is. It’s got a fantastic look and feel and really no downsides in terms of quality at all. If you’re looking for a Voltron and have an above-retail budget, then this is likely it.
