Bandai Tamashii has kicked their Dragonball Kai Figuarts line into high gear with their latest release; Awakening Goku. This version of Goku is a “battered” look with tattered clothing and scratches throughout. To compliment this, the faces included are stoic, grit, and yelling. I like that they didn’t include something like a smile or smirk since they really wouldn’t fit a look the shows Goku is blatantly in the heat of battle. The hands included are pretty standard; fight, spirt bomb, kame, and one that look like they’re “almost” in a grip pose (I don’t really understand those ones.) I was surprised at the lack of blast effect but am definitely content with what this Goku comes with. The paint applications are spot on and I personally like the new “tampoed” application of the eyes. There’s a very “cartoon” or “cell shaded” vibe that it gives and goes over on me.

The poseability on this ons is fantastic and I dig the new areas of articulaton implemented like the double ab crunch. I also really enjoy how the clothing is molded to pose right along with it and not look awkward. Things like the thigh swivel just come off so “smart” that you can’t help but to be impressed.

They knocked it out of the freaking park with this one and one of the most neat parts is that the newer features also hint at where they’re going with the engineering and styling of the line in general which looks to be a great direction. I swear I was just saying that I was out on this line and Bandai pulls me right back in.

Overall Score: 9.5/10
